My husband and I have three grown children and never spanked any of them. We used to find unique punishments like, "If you don't _______, we won't let you brush your teeth." When the kids were young, that threat worked very well. When the kids fought with each other, they'd have to sit on our love seat until they learned to love each other. They spent a lot of time punishing themselves with that one.
